frequently asked questions
Can all types of scalp scars be camouflaged with pigment?
Not all scars are suitable. Flat, stable scars that have fully healed respond best to pigment. Raised scars, keloids, scars that are still pink or changing, and scars with active inflammation are not good candidates. Very pale or very dark scars may not blend as effectively. A consultation assesses scar type, texture, and skin tone to determine whether camouflage is realistic and what results can be achieved based on individual healing characteristics.
How many sessions are typically needed to blend a scar?
Most clients need two sessions. The first builds initial coverage, and the second refines tone and density once the skin has healed and the pigment has settled. Some scars accept pigment well on the first pass, while others require additional work due to texture or absorption differences. Sessions are spaced four to eight weeks apart to allow full healing. Complex or larger scars may require a third session to achieve balanced, natural-looking results.
Does scar camouflage hurt more than other scalp treatments?
Scar tissue has reduced nerve sensitivity, so some clients feel less discomfort than expected, while others find certain areas more sensitive depending on the scar’s location and depth. A topical anaesthetic is applied before the procedure to minimise discomfort. Mild tenderness, tightness, or a scratching sensation during the session is normal. After the treatment, the area may feel slightly sore or tight for a day or two, similar to a mild sunburn, but this usually resolves quickly.
Will the pigment fade differently on scar tissue compared to normal skin?
Yes, scar tissue typically holds pigment differently due to its altered structure and reduced blood flow. Pigment may fade faster or appear lighter over time compared to surrounding skin. Some scars absorb pigment unevenly, requiring a second session to build consistent coverage. Sun exposure, skin type, and scar maturity all influence how the pigment settles and lasts. Regular top-ups every few years help maintain a balanced appearance and adjust for any colour shifts that occur naturally.
Can I still have this treatment if I have a hair transplant planned?
It is best to complete any planned hair transplant surgery before considering scar camouflage. New surgical procedures can alter the scar tissue, change pigment placement, or create additional scarring that would need separate treatment. Once the transplant has fully healed and the scars have matured, usually after six to twelve months, camouflage can be assessed and planned. Timing the treatments in the correct order ensures the best possible outcome and avoids unnecessary revisions or corrections later.
