5 SMP aftercare rules that protect your shaved-head results

5 SMP aftercare rules that protect your shaved-head results

Contents

You have just had your SMP done and the result looks sharp. Now the question is: what do you do with your scalp for the next four weeks? The wrong moves during this window can soften your dots, shift your pigment, or cost you density you have already paid for. Here is exactly what to do, and when.

1. Keep your scalp completely dry for the first four days

This is the rule that catches most people off guard. For days one through four, no water should touch your scalp at all. No shower spray on the head, no sweating through a hard workout, no sauna, no swimming. The pigment dots are freshly placed and the skin needs time to begin sealing around them.

Water exposure at this stage can dilute the pigment before it has anchored properly, leading to patchiness when the scalp heals. Wash your body with your head tilted back, or use a hand-held showerhead directed well below the hairline. It is inconvenient for four days. It is worth it for years of results.

2. Begin gentle washing on day five, but keep it mild

From day five onwards, you can introduce water and a very gentle, fragrance-free cleanser. Lukewarm water only is recommended at this stage as nothing hot should be used. Pat dry with a clean towel rather than rubbing, which can disturb the surface of the skin while it is still in the early stages of healing.

Avoid medicated shampoos, exfoliating scrubs, and anything containing alcohol or strong active ingredients. The scalp is still healing and the epidermal layer above the pigment is consolidating. Think of this phase as maintenance rather than deep cleansing.

3. Stay out of direct sun until at least day ten

UV exposure is one of the fastest ways to fade SMP pigment, and that risk is highest when the skin is healing. For the first ten days, keep your scalp out of direct sunlight entirely. A hat is your best tool here, ideally a loose-fitting one that does not create friction on the treated area.

After day ten, SPF becomes a daily non-negotiable. Dermatologists and SMP specialists alike recommend SPF 30 to 50 on a shaved or close-cropped scalp. The scalp receives more direct UV exposure than almost any other part of the body, and regular SPF application is one of the clearest predictors of how long your results will last before a touch-up is needed.

4. Moisturise from day five to support the healing skin

Once you have passed the initial dry phase, adding a light, non-comedogenic moisturiser to your scalp care routine helps the skin recover without interfering with pigment retention. A small amount of fragrance-free lotion applied once daily keeps the skin supple and reduces the risk of excessive flaking as the top layer sheds.

Do not over-apply. The scalp does not need a thick barrier cream. A light layer is sufficient to support healing without blocking the pores or trapping bacteria. Avoid anything marketed as a scar treatment or wound healer at this stage, as those formulas are often too occlusive for scalp use. If you have naturally oily skin, you may not need moisturiser at all; read your skin and adjust accordingly.

5. Wait until day 28 before resuming a blade shave

This is the question most frequently asked by shaved-head clients, and the answer is clear: wait until 28 days after your final session before taking a blade to your scalp. Full healing takes approximately one month. The skin above the pigment needs to consolidate fully before you introduce the mechanical action of shaving.

Shaving too early risks disrupting the healed surface, pulling at pigment that has not fully settled, and creating uneven fading. An electric clipper on a zero or one grade is generally safe from around day ten if you need to manage length, but blades require patience. Once you are past the 28-day mark, you can shave as frequently as needed to maintain the look. Many clients shave every one to three days to keep the shaved-head SMP result clean and consistent.

Following this protocol carefully is what separates a result that holds its density and crispness for three to five years from one that requires early remedial work. The aftercare window is short. The payoff is long.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I go to the gym in the first week after my SMP treatment?

Avoid any exercise that causes significant sweating for the first four days after SMP. Sweat introduces moisture and bacteria to a freshly treated scalp, which can interfere with pigment settlement. Light activity with minimal sweating may be acceptable from day five, but intense training should wait until after day ten.

Why does my SMP look patchy or lighter after healing?

Some lightening and minor patchiness after the first session is completely normal. The epidermis sheds a thin layer during healing, which temporarily mutes the dots. Pigment dot density is built progressively across two to four sessions. Your practitioner will assess coverage at your next appointment and increase density where needed.

When can I swim after my SMP scalp treatment?

Swimming pools and open water should be avoided for 28 days following your final SMP session. Chlorinated water and salt water can both penetrate healing skin and cause premature pigment fading. After the full healing period, swimming is fine, though regular SPF application afterwards helps protect the scalp from UV exposure.

How often will I need a touch-up after shaved-head SMP?

Most clients return for a top-up appointment every three to five years. How quickly your results fade depends on sun exposure, skin type, metabolism, and how consistently you use SPF. Oily skin and high sun exposure accelerate fading. Dry skin and daily SPF 30 to 50 application support longer-lasting SMP scalp results.

Is it normal for my scalp to feel itchy during SMP healing?

Mild itching is a normal part of the healing process as the epidermis regenerates over the treated area. Do not scratch or pick at the scalp, as this can displace pigment or cause uneven fading. A light, fragrance-free moisturiser applied from day five can help reduce irritation without interfering with pigment retention.
